Description
Weed competition is one of the leading causes of yield loss in maize farming across Kenya and East Africa. Weeds compete with crops for nutrients, water, sunlight, and space. This leads to stunted maize growth, poor development, and reduced yields. Maguguma Top 500SC Selective Herbicide for Maize is a proven, reliable solution for effective weed control that does not harm your maize crop. It is specifically designed to target unwanted vegetation early in the crop’s development cycle, giving your maize the best chance to thrive.
Maguguma Top 500SC combines two powerful active ingredients—Atrazine (200g/L) and Metolachlor (300g/L)—to control a wide variety of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. This herbicide is formulated as a suspension concentrate and comes in a convenient 1-litre pack, perfect for small to medium-sized maize farms.

How It Works
Maguguma Top 500SC functions through a dual mode of action from its two active ingredients:
-
Atrazine inhibits photosynthesis by interfering with the electron transport chain in susceptible weeds. It is absorbed primarily through the roots and is transported throughout the plant to stop weed growth.
-
Metolachlor inhibits cell division and elongation in emerging weed shoots. It is absorbed through the hypocotyl and coleoptile during weed germination, making it especially effective against grasses and small-seeded broadleaf weeds.
This combination ensures both immediate knockdown of emerging weeds and residual soil activity that suppresses additional weed germination for several weeks after application.
Key Benefits Of Maguguma Top 500SC
Broad-spectrum weed control
Maguguma Top 500SC targets a wide variety of problematic weed species commonly found in maize fields, including both grass and broadleaf weeds.
Dual timing flexibility
This herbicide can be applied both pre-emergence (after planting, before weed emergence) and early post-emergence (when maize has germinated and weeds have just begun to emerge). This gives farmers flexibility depending on weather conditions and field status.
Long-lasting residual effect
Due to its strong soil activity, Maguguma Top 500SC continues to control weeds weeks after spraying. This reduces the need for multiple applications and ensures clean fields throughout the critical early stages of crop development.
Selective action
Formulated to be safe for maize when used at the recommended dose. It will not harm the maize crop while effectively controlling unwanted vegetation.
Improved maize yield
By minimizing weed competition, maize plants grow stronger and more uniformly. They make better use of available nutrients and moisture, resulting in improved cob development and increased grain yields.
Labour savings
Using Maguguma Top 500SC reduces the need for hand weeding, slashing, or repeat spraying. This lowers your labour costs and saves time during critical farm operations.
Target Weeds Controlled
Maguguma Top 500SC is effective against:
-
Pigweed (Amaranthus spp.)
-
Black nightshade (Solanum nigrum)
-
Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis)
-
Gallant soldier (Galinsoga parviflora)
-
Goosefoot (Chenopodium album)
-
Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.)
-
Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli)
-
Crowfoot grass (Dactyloctenium aegyptium)
-
Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus)
-
Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus)
-
Lovegrass (Eragrostis spp.)
Application Instructions
Timing
For pre-emergence application, apply Maguguma Top 500SC immediately after planting but before maize and weeds germinate. For early post-emergence, apply when maize is 1–3 weeks old and weeds are still at the early growth stage.
Mixing and dosage
Shake the product well before use. Mix 150 to 200ml of Maguguma Top 500SC in 20 litres of clean water. For heavy soils or high weed pressure, use up to 250ml per 20 litres. Spray evenly across the field using properly calibrated knapsack or boom sprayers.
Spray volume
Use 200–300 litres of water per hectare to ensure thorough coverage.
Rainfastness
The product becomes rainfast within 4 to 6 hours of application. Avoid spraying when heavy rain is expected immediately after application.
Safety and Handling
-
Wear protective clothing, gloves, mask, and goggles when mixing and applying
-
Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product
-
Wash hands and face thoroughly after spraying
-
Keep product away from children, pets, food, and water sources
-
Do not reuse the empty container. Triple rinse, puncture, and dispose according to local pesticide disposal guidelines
Environmental Considerations
Maguguma Top 500SC is formulated to degrade in the soil after a few weeks, reducing the risk of long-term residue buildup. However, avoid application near water bodies or where runoff may affect aquatic life.
Do not apply on sandy soils prone to leaching or in areas with shallow groundwater. Observe buffer zones around sensitive areas like rivers and wetlands.
Compatibility
This herbicide can be safely tank-mixed with most foliar feeds and systemic insecticides. Do not mix with alkaline solutions. Always conduct a small jar test before mixing unfamiliar products.
